(George Floyd and Black Lives Matter)

Outline(개요)

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down, begging for his life and repeatedly saying "I can't breathe".

The following day, after videos made by witnesses and security cameras became public, all four officers were fired. Two autopsies found Floyd's death to be a homicide. Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, to which was later added second-degree murder; the three other officers were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

Floyd's death triggered demonstrations and protests in over 2,000 U.S. cities and around the world against police brutality, police racism, and lack of police accountability.

Point of Discussion(주요 논점)

Q. Are the police officials actions wrong?

M. Yes, their behaviors are obiously terrible.

m. I totally agree with that, but we need to consider that some behaviors seem like being excessive are only police officials' means of self-defense in US.

Q. How do we judge protestors' violence?

M. Violence can't be a way to solve racism. It is just an anger-out and even dameges original values of the movement.

m. We might think to express their anger is important in many ways, too.

Q. 'Black Lives Matter' or 'All Lives Matter', which one is better?

A1. Black is a symbol of minority especially in racism. So Black can easily represent all of minorities, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and so on.

A2. Discrimination against minority by another minority is a big problem, too. Sometimes, we used to see some Black or Hispanic are likely to do discriminatory gesture against Asian, and vice versa. Therefore, to change the slogan to 'All Lives Matter' can be a effective strategy.

'Black Lives Matter' or 'All Lives Matter' 중 어떤 것이 나은가?
